Essential Air Service

                 The importance of reliable airline service has never been more important to our nation or our state than it is right now. For the seven eastern Montana communities that receive Essential Air Service, the transition from one provider to another is very tumultuous to say the least.

             Richland Economic Development has been supportive and active in its effort to keep this means of transportation available to the residents of Richland County.  In July, our office participated in an EAS task force meeting at which we gave the task force a community “pulse” of the changes that should be made to improve our service.

             In January, our office was invited to the Governor’s office to participate on a state wide telephone conference discussing the bankruptcy of Big Sky Airlines. The conversation included the identification of state and various air port authority resources to assist the pilots of Big Sky Airlines to purchase the company. The pilots were advised to develop a sound business plan, and then

seek an audience with the task force for consideration of the formal request.

             As is the nature of corporate business, Richland Economic Development’s involvement will be to continue to promote the vital importance of having reliable air service coverage for our residents.

             Our office has communicated with our congressional delegation to continue to keep them well informed of the need to adequately fund the Essential Air Service. Senators Baucus and Tester, and Congressman Rehberg have all gone to Congress in support of the EAS.

             As the future will soon reveal which provider will be servicing the EAS contract, we would like to remind the traveling public that this transition will take time. Be patient as the reins of control are determined. And as our uncertainty and frustration over the thought of disruption of service escalates, keep in mind that that aggravation is better than having no airline service at all.
